May 10 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged a ‌spate of measures including fuel conservation, work-from-home practices and limits on travel and imports, as a surge in global energy prices puts pressure on the country's foreign exchange reserves.

The Reuters Power Up newsletter provides everything you need to know about the global energy industry. Sign up here.

  • People should prioritise a return to work-from-home and online meetings, widely adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it would help India use less fuel, Modi said.
  • "In the current situation, we must place great emphasis on saving foreign exchange," he said.
  • Modi also asked people to use public transport such as the metro and to carpool where possible to conserve fuel.
  • India, the world's third-biggest oil importer and consumer, ‌late last month said there was no proposal to raise pump prices for diesel and gasoline, leaving it among the countries yet to raise prices despite the global surge.
  • Modi urged people to avoid buying gold — which India spends on heavily during weddings — and to cut non-essential overseas travel for at least a year to save foreign exchange.
  • He called on families to reduce cooking oil consumption, describing that move as both healthy and patriotic.
  • Modi also asked farmers to cut fertilizer use by as much as half.

China April exports rebound strongly, trade surplus widens ahead of Trump visit

LONDON/BEIJING, May 9 (Reuters) - China's export growth gathered pace in April as factories raced to meet a wave of orders from AI-related industries and other buyers seeking to stockpile components amid fears the Iran war could push global input costs even higher.
That export strength, which has seen China's trade surplus with the U.S. widen to $87.7 billion ‌so far this year, will be in focus next week as President Donald Trump travels to Beijing for a leaders' summit expected to extend last year's trade truce.

While Chinese exporters have so far weathered the fallout from the Middle East conflict economists warn that the longer the war drags on and energy prices rise, the greater the risk that external demand fades away -- leaving sluggish domestic consumption unable to plug the gap.
For now economists are watching the pace of the AI manufacturing boom and whether shipments of related equipment can keep the Chinese export engine purring.
"The conflict in the Middle East pushed up demand for global manufacturing inventory replenishment, and under the upward cycle of semiconductors, imports and exports maintained a boom," according to Xing Zhaopeng, senior China strategist at ANZ.

Trump's China visit adds sparkle to July 4 celebrations for fireworks maker

By Casey Hall

LILING, China, May 8 (Reuters) - Emblazoned on a box of Chinese fireworks is a picture of U.S. President Donald Trump raising his fist in defiance after a failed assassination bid in 2024, juxtaposed with the U.S. flag and the slogan “Fight for America”.

This year’s celebrations for U.S. Independence Day on July 4 will be “a lot better” than last year, said Wilson Lam, U.S. business manager for Black Scorpion Fireworks in China’s southern city of Liling.

Last year manufacturers were struggling with tariff hikes of more than 100 percentage points, Lam said, but their reversal has boosted orders from U.S. customers by 15% to 30% this year for his brand.

It is the overseas face of a three-decades-old factory in a region that has turned out fireworks for more than 1,300 years, originally meant to dispel evil spirits.

And Trump’s visit to Beijing, set for mid-May, just weeks before the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, shows how intertwined the world’s two biggest economies remain, Lam said, with the U.S. taking almost 40% of China’s fireworks exports.

“Husbands and wives fight too, that’s normal,” he said, speaking amid a sea of fireworks boxes draped in U.S. patriotic symbols, from eagles to the Statue of Liberty.

“But we can’t live without each other because we are the biggest trading partners in the world.”

Most July 4 shipments have already been delivered or are in transit, said Lam, so there will be no delays from a temporary production halt this week for safety inspections after a deadly blast at a factory in the area.

MADE IN CHINA FOR U.S. INDEPENDENCE DAY

Some boxes bore the ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan from Trump’s presidential campaign that promised to bring home the jobs U.S. workers had lost to China and other nations.

China’s exports of fireworks accounted for two-thirds of global sales last year, although their value, at $1.14 billion, shrank from $1.16 billion the year before, data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity shows.

Factories usually ship orders in April for July 4 events, but many went on hold last year, after U.S. tariffs spiked 145 percentage points following Trump’s “Liberation Day” levies.

Retaliation from China forced Washington to lower the barriers within weeks. Lam’s fireworks, shipped after Independence Day, were set off during other celebrations instead, such as New Year.

Black Scorpion’s factories, where workers make the products largely by hand, are located in China’s “fireworks corridor” in the provinces of Hunan and Jiangxi, where state media say hundreds of thousands of people are employed.

‘LET THEM MAKE FIREWORKS’

As much as 70% of their raw material comes from the regional city of Liuyang, with more than 400 fireworks stores and just under 1.5 million people. Tourists flock to regular fireworks festivals there and in its smaller neighbour, Pingxiang.

Liu Fangguo, the founder of the Shengding Fireworks Factory in Pingxiang, has made the painful decision to largely divert exports away from the United States and escape the bother of tariffs.

“We’ve tried every means to shift to domestic sales or sell to other countries,” he said. “We gradually recovered but the impact (of tariffs) is still there.”

Eric Zheng, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in the commercial hub of Shanghai, said its members were wary that China-U.S. ties could sour again, but most expected Trump’s visit to extend a short-term “truce” in trade hostilities.

“If you move away from China, it will be a loss for U.S. consumers,” Zheng said, adding that they hankered for China’s well-made affordable exports, from fireworks to garments and shoes.

“So let them make fireworks.”

UK summons Chinese ambassador after national security convictions linked to Hong Kong

ISTANBUL

Britain has summoned the Chinese ambassador to London after three men were convicted under the UK National Security Act for assisting Hong Kong intelligence services, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said Saturday.

The statement was released by the UK government, one day after the summons in London.

The FCDO said Zheng Zeguang was summoned Friday following the conclusion of the case, which involved activities linked to the Hong Kong authorities.

“On instruction from the Foreign Secretary, the Chinese Ambassador was summoned to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office,” an FCDO spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson added that Britain made clear it “will not tolerate any attempts by foreign states to intimidate, harass or harm individuals or communities in the UK,” calling the actions “a serious breach of the UK’s sovereignty.”

“We will continue to use the full range of tools available to protect our security and hold China to account for actions which undermine our safety and democratic values,” said the spokesperson.

Microsoft’s African data center falters on payment demands, Bloomberg News reports

May 10 (Reuters) - A Microsoft data center site in East Africa has been delayed by disagreements with the ‌Kenyan government over the company’s request for guaranteed payments, ‌Bloomberg News reported on Sunday citing people familiar with the matter.

In May 2024, Microsoft partnered with UAE-based AI firm G42 to invest $1 billion in a data center in Kenya as part of its efforts to expand cloud-computing services in East Africa. The project was ‌announced during Kenyan President William Ruto’s state visit to Washington under the Biden administration.

The facility was set to run entirely on geothermal power as well as provide access to Microsoft's Azure through a cloud region for East Africa.

Microsoft and G42 asked the Kenyan government to commit to paying for a certain amount of ‌capacity annually, but the talks broke down when it couldn’t provide the guarantees at the level Microsoft requested, the Bloomberg report said.

The Bloomberg report added that the group might ultimately decide to scale back the project.

Kenya is moving ahead with the ‌talks, and “it is not failed or withdrawn,” Bloomberg quoted principal secretary at Kenya’s Ministry of Information John Tanui as saying in an interview.

"The scale of ‌the data center they wanted to do still requires some structuring," he said, adding that power requirements are still under discussion.

Microsoft, G42, and Kenya's Information Ministry did not immediately respond ‌to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters could not immediately verify the Bloomberg report.

Missed Opportunities: How Avoiding News Content Limits Advertising Impact

In today’s complex media landscape, where your brand’s ads show up, matters more than ever. Brands are constantly trying to balance two big goals: staying in brand-safe environments and connecting with the right audience. It’s not always an easy line to walk, and advertisers have recently become hesitant to place their ads on news content. However, by avoiding news content altogether, they could be missing out on great opportunities.

The key to brand-safe advertising is to focus on placing ads in trustworthy, high-quality news environments that attract relevant and engaged audiences.

Why Keyword Blocking Isn’t the Whole Answer

In an effort to shield their brands from potentially harmful content, many advertisers rely on keyword blocking – filtering out ads from appearing near certain topics. While this approach might seem like a safe bet, it often goes too far. Ads end up being blocked from valuable and relevant content, reducing opportunities for both advertisers and publishers.

In reality, a study by Stagwell, called the “Future of News”, found that there is no negative impact on brand safety when ads appear next to hard-hitting news topics like the US election or even war/conflict coverage. This finding challenges the common belief that serious news topics are automatically bad for brands. Overusing restrictions like keyword blocking could actually hurt brands more by shutting them out of places where their audience is already engaged.

Building Trust with Quality Journalism

Advertising on trusted new sites is about more than just visibility – it’s about credibility. Premium publishers are known for their strong fact-checking and high standards, offering readers content they can trust.

Compare that to platforms like Instagram and Facebook, where Meta recently announced they will no longer fact-check their content. When brands choose to appear on trustworthy news sites they align themselves with reliability and credibility, which can make a big difference in how they’re seen by consumers.

The data backs this up. A study by Newsworks found that people trust brands 1.5x more when those brands advertise on news websites compared to non-news sites. Ads in trusted environments not only protect your brand but also improve how people perceive and engage with it.

A Smarter Way Forward

Brand safety is, and will always be, a fundamental pillar of advertising, but avoiding quality news content isn’t the answer. Instead, brands should explore smarter strategies like contextual advertising. This approach places ads alongside relevant, premium content where audiences are already engaged.

With Dianomi, brands can tap into contextual advertising to position their messages within high-quality articles that matter to their target audience. It’s a win-win: brands enhance their credibility, and audiences see ads that feel relevant and trustworthy.

Conclusion

Brand safety isn’t about steering clear of the news – it’s about being thoughtful about where your ads appear. Trusted news environments offer a unique chance to boost credibility and connect with audiences in meaningful ways. By leveraging tools like contextual advertising, brads can create campaigns that build trust, improve engagement, and still reach the audiences that matter most.

British paratroopers lead airdrop onto Tristan da Cunha for suspected hantavirus case

MADRID, May 10 (Reuters) - British paratroopers have dropped onto Britain's most remote overseas territory, Tristan da Cunha, along with medics and medical supplies, after a case of suspected hantavirus was confirmed there.
A team of six paratroopers and two military clinicians from 16 ‌Air Assault Brigade jumped from an RAF A400M transport aircraft that flew 6,788 km (4,218 miles) from RAF Brize Norton air base in Oxfordshire to Ascension Island then another 3,000 km due south to Tristan da Cunha.

"With oxygen
supplies on the island at a critical ‌level, an airdrop with medical personnel was the only method of getting vital care to the patient in time," the Ministry of Defence statement said.Tristan da Cunha, home to only around 200 people, is halfway between South Africa and South America. It is the world's remotest inhabited island, more than 2,400 km and a six-day boat ride from St Helena, its nearest inhabited neighbour. It usually relies on a medical team of two people for its health needs, and is normally only accessible by boat as it has no airstrip.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were previously delivered by military plane on May 7 to Ascension Island, where another British man from the cruise ship had disembarked before being medically evacuated to South Africa.
