Why you might like the Amex Blue Cash Preferred as an everyday card

CNN Underscored reviews financial products based on their overall value. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is the only American Express cash-back credit card that comes with an annual fee, at least after the first year. But it has the potential to earn enough cash back on many families’ ordinary expenses to offset the annual fee several times over, and it also offers a credit that could offset the fee all by itself.

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred is a great card for families and commuters, because it earns a lot of cash back on grocery, streaming, gas and transit purchases. In fact, in our article about the best cards to use for groceries — and this Amex offering is absolutely among the top choices for that — we called it “the all-American credit card” because it gives top rewards on spending related to things most households in the U.S. do a lot of.

Besides the annual fee, its only major negative is that the cash back it earns can’t be turned into points and used to book travel. But if you aren’t interested in that and only want cash back, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred can deliver serious value, with only a few caveats. Let’s look at why this card is a serious contender for many families.

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred at a glance

  • Welcome offer: As high as $300 cash back* after spending $3,000 in the first six months. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for one — you’ll need to apply first to see your personalized offer (with no impact to your credit score unless you’re approved and accept).
  • 0% APR intro period: 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months from the date of account opening, then a variable APR, 19.49% to 28.49% (see rates and fees).
  • Annual fee: $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95 (see rates and fees).

In the first year of having the card, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred doesn’t charge an annual fee, and the $95 a year it charges after that can be offset pretty easily (see rates and fees). For new card holders, the welcome offer allows you to earn as high as $300 cash back after spending $3,000 in purchases within six months of opening the card — an easily attainable target.

The Blue Cash Preferred also offers a year without interest on purchases and balance transfers, which can be an attractive option for people who want time to pay for a big purchase or have debt from another credit card they want to transfer. Just note that balance transfers can only be requested within the first 60 days of account opening and that a fee applies to each transfer, either 3% or $5, whichever is greater (see rates and fees).

The clincher for many people might be the yearly $120 Disney streaming credit. After enrolling, you can get up to a $10 monthly statement credit if you use the card to buy a subscription, including bundles, to Disney+, Hulu or ESPN. That credit alone is larger than the annual fee.

Pros

  • High cash back earnings on many everyday expenses.
  • Intro period with no interest.
  • $120 Disney streaming credit.

Cons

  • Limited redemption options for the cash back earned.
  • Bonus cash back earnings at supermarkets are capped at $6,000 in spending per year.
  • $95 annual fee, after the $0 introductory annual fee (see rates and fees).
  • 2.7% foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees).

We’ll see below what the limitations to the card’s cash-back earnings and redemptions are, although they won’t be deal breakers for most people. It’s also worth noting that earnings are geared towards spending in the U.S., and you would be charged a 2.7% foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees) if using the card abroad anyway (or charge in currencies other than the U.S. dollar.) Consider a credit card that doesn’t have foreign transaction fees if you’re planning a trip abroad.

Earning cash back with the Amex Blue Cash Preferred

  • 6% cash back* on up to $6,000 spent at U.S. supermarkets each year (then 1%).
  • 6% cash back* on select U.S. streaming subscriptions.
  • 3% cash back *on transit.
  • 3% cash back* at U.S. gas stations.
  • 1% cash back* on other types of spending.

The biggest advantage of the Blue Cash Preferred is its elevated earnings on groceries and streaming. In fact, it offers the highest cash-back rate on both those categories of any card. There is, however, a $6,000 spending cap on how much elevated cash back you can earn at supermarkets, meaning you can earn 6% only on the first $6,000 spent. After this, your grocery earnings drop to 1%. Other cash-back cards offer lower earnings on groceries but with no spending cap, so if you know you spend well over $500 on groceries per month, then you may get more value out of another card even if it has a lower earning rate on groceries. But even at $6,000 in yearly spending at supermarkets in the U.S., you’d earn 36,000 American Express Reward Dollars, which can be redeemed for $360 at one cent per dollar. That alone would be almost four times more money earned than you’d spend on the annual fee.

The 6% earnings on streaming have no spending cap and cover pretty much all the major streamers that most Americans watch, like Netflix, Disney+, Spotify and YouTube TV.

Blue Cash Preferred card holders also get an unlimited cash-back rate of 3% on gas and transit. For example, a New York City commuter who spends $100 every month on the subway or trains would earn $36 in cash back over the course of a year (300 Rewards Dollars a month times 12, redeemed at one cent each).

You also have access to Amex Offers, which opens up the opportunity to earn even more cash back on top of your regular earnings. For example, you could be targeted for a bonus cash back offer on gas on top of the 3% you already earn.

If you do your grocery shopping at Target, Walmart or wholesale clubs, this card many not be for you, since those places are excluded from the 6% earnings. And the 3% earnings on gas does not apply to gas stations within supermarkets, superstores and warehouse clubs — only to standalone gas stations.

Using cash back from the Amex Blue Cash Preferred

The card earns cash back in the form of Reward Dollars, which can be redeemed at one cent per dollar for statement credits that lower your credit card bill. That may seem very limited especially compared to the numerous uses of American Express Membership Rewards® points earned from several other Amex cards — but it’s also not a surprise for a card whose very name clearly says it’s meant for those who prefer cash back. If you’re not interested in the intricacies of credit card points, that one redemption option equals money effectively in your pocket.

I’ve flown Southwest for 26 years. These are the credit cards I actually recommend

I’ve been flying Southwest Airlines for more than two decades, and in that time, I’ve watched the airline change dramatically. I’ve taken 117 Southwest flights since joining Rapid Rewards in 2000, back when the airline was known for open seating, two free checked bags and a refreshingly simple approach to flying. While many of those things helped make Southwest easy to stay loyal to, recent changes like checked bag fees, assigned seating and premium seating options have fundamentally changed the value proposition for frequent flyers.

As a result, it has also changed the role of Southwest’s credit cards. Today, the right card can do much more than help you earn Rapid Rewards points. It can offset travel costs, improve your boarding experience, help you earn the Companion Pass faster and provide benefits that have become even more valuable as the airline has moved away from some of its longtime customer-friendly policies.

I’ve flown Southwest long enough to experience both versions of the airline, and I’ve spent years evaluating travel rewards cards professionally. Based on that experience, I took a fresh look at Southwest’s lineup of co-branded credit cards, along with a flexible travel rewards card that pairs particularly well with the airline.

In this guide, I break down the cards that actually deliver meaningful long-term value based on how you travel. Like all CNN Underscored Money coverage, these recommendations are based on not only firsthand experience and our credit card methodology, with an emphasis on practical benefits and real-world usability rather than just flashy welcome bonuses.

You can buy World Cup tickets with Chase Sapphire cards starting today

Starting today, Feb. 10, soccer fans who have a Chase Sapphire credit card — either a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or a Chase Sapphire Reserve® — have exclusive access to buy tickets to the 2026 soccer World Cup. The tournament will be played in the US, Canada and Mexico in June and July this year, and Chase Sapphire card holders can purchase up to four tickets per match across all US host cities.

Chase hasn’t said what the prices will be, but we know that fans have criticized FIFA, the international soccer body that organizes the competition, for setting World Cup ticket prices too high.

To buy tickets, you must open a free account with FIFA. Then, starting Feb. 10 at 12 p.m. ET through Feb. 24, 2026 (or while supplies last), you can head to Chase’s Sapphire Experiences site, where you’ll see a dedicated FIFA section that says “Access tickets.” You’ll have to enter your card number to verify eligibility, and then you’ll receive a unique link redirecting to the FIFA site, where you can actually buy the tickets. Chase recommends saving or copying the link just in case, since eligible card holders can only receive up to two links.

Each card holder can buy up to four tickets per available match and up to 40 total for the entire tournament. You can’t use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to buy them, though, since they are sold through the official FIFA ticketing system.

The following cards qualify for this exclusive offer:

Card holders will have access to matches from June 12 through July 18, 2026, in all US host cities:

  • Atlanta
  • Boston
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • Kansas City, Missouri
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • New York/New Jersey
  • Philadelphia
  • San Francisco
  • Seattle

The US is playing on June 12 in Inglewood, California, against Paraguay; June 19 in Seattle against Australia; and June 25 in Inglewood against a team to be determined. If the team passes the group stage, there will be more matches.

This year, the most-watched sporting event in the world — which takes place every four years — is the largest it’s ever been, with 48 national teams taking part. The US men’s team participates automatically, without needing to qualify, since the US is one of the three host nations.

England outlasts France in thrilling World Cup Bronze Final

The third place match at the 2026 World Cup appeared to be a blowout, but the tide turned in the second half, leading to a thrilling 6-4 win for England over France on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

With manager Didier Deschamps admitting before the game the French didn’t want to play, Les Bleus still trotted out some of their big hitters including Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise and Mike Maignan, while England sat regular starters Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Jordan Pickford.

Despite the apparent lineup advantage, France found themselves in an early hole and the Three Lions continued to roar past the French as the first half went on.

England captain Declan Rice got the scoring started right out of the gate, launching a screamer from the top of the box past Maignan in just the third minute of the match.

It wasn’t long until defender Ezri Konsa headed in Rice’s corner to extend England’s lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute.

England fans celebrate during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Bronze Final between France and England at Miami Stadium on July 18, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Florida.

As halftime approached and France looking stunned by the English offensive onslaught, forward Bukayo Saka scored two goals within 10 minutes to officially turn the match into something no one thought would happen – an English blowout.

Or, that was, until halftime.

France made a quadruple sub to start the second half, bringing on reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé along with Lucas Digne, Dayot Upamecano and Bradley Barcola to give a boost.

Just three minutes into the half, Mbappé scored his ninth goal of the tournament to overtake Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the lead in the 2026 Golden Boot race.

The World Cup is over, long live the World Cup: A look back at one of the best tournaments ever

Note: This story first appeared in The Beautiful Game by CNN Sports, our daily newsletter on all things World Cup. While we’re saying goodbye for now, we will be back for the European domestic club season. See you then!

And just like that, the 2026 World Cup is over. After 308 goals were scored during 104 matches in 16 host cities across three countries, it was Spain that lifted the trophy.

And while the final wasn’t exactly one for the neutral, it was fitting that the best team in the tournament won in the end.

But while La Roja supporters around the world celebrated the country’s second title (Spanish editor’s note: my headache and I can confirm this occurred in North London), everyone else was left reflecting on an emotional, record-breaking, superstar-studded edition of the tournament.

For years, there were so many concerns around this World Cup. Would it be safe? Would the locals care? Would it be a waste of money? And while those critics were proved right at times, the 2026 edition can still be considered a resounding success.

And that’s not down to the politicians or governing bodies; it’s down to the millions of fans who flocked to North America to party with one another. It’s down to the superstars who turned up and performed at the highest level and to the tournament minnows who punched well above their weight.

So, in our last World Cup edition of this newsletter, it only feels right to remember some of the most magical moments.

The Main Thing: And the award goes to…

Before Spain got its hands on the main trophy, there were also several individual awards handed out at the end of yesterday’s final.

France’s Kylian Mbappé was named the winner of the Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals – becoming the World Cup’s all-time top scorer in the process. Spanish defender Pau Cubarsí was named the best young player, Unai Simón was awarded the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper and midfielder Rodri won the Golden Ball for player of the tournament.
