Microsoft to offer voluntary retirement to thousands of US employees for the first time

Microsoft is offering about 7% of its US workforce the option to retire early, the latest attempt by a major tech firm to downsize while ramping up artificial intelligence investments.

The one-time retirement program, a company first, will be available to employees whose age and years of service total 70 or higher, Microsoft said.

CNBC and Bloomberg first reported the voluntary buyouts, which the company confirmed to CNN.

Those at the senior director level and below will be able to participate, and Microsoft plans to notify eligible employees on May 7.

Microsoft shares (MSFT) fell nearly 4% on Thursday, the day the company informed employees about the program.

Tech giants have made sweeping staff cuts over the past year in response to the impact of AI on both the workforce and the broader tech industry. Meta on Thursday said it would cut 10% of its workers, or roughly 8,000 jobs, to operate more efficiently and offset other investments. Amazon eliminated 30,000 jobs across two rounds of layoffs in January and October. And fintech company Block slashed a staggering 40% of its staff earlier this year because “a significantly smaller team” can “do more and do it better” with AI tools.

Microsoft, like other tech companies, has been investing heavily in AI infrastructure and tools. It spent $37.5 billion on expenses related to data centers and infrastructure in the quarter that ended in December.

Some tech leaders have claimed that AI has enabled them to accomplish more with smaller teams, thanks in part to AI’s proficiency in writing code. Microsoft is among the many companies offering developers coding agents that can work on their behalf.

China’s AI upstart DeepSeek drops new model. Will it make waves like last year?

Hong Kong —

China’s DeepSeek unveiled a preview version of its much-anticipated new model on Friday, promising to rival models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google a year after the then little-known start up took the global AI industry by storm.

The Hangzhou-based company highlighted major upgrades in the new model V4’s reasoning and agentic abilities that could act autonomously on one’s behalf, like writing code. It also boasted new capabilities that enhance the model’s efficiency in processing larger numbers of tokens, the fundamental units of information which AI models use to comprehend instructions.

DeepSeek became the poster child for China’s AI boom after its groundbreaking 2025 release of the R1 model that delivered near industry-leading performance – for allegedly a fraction of the price.

The breakout success tumbled American AI stocks, raising questions about the ever-larger investments into data center buildouts. At the same time, it bolstered confidence in Chinese technology and heated up the tech race with the US.

Israel and the UAE find common cause as the Iran war cracks old Middle East alliances

From almost any other country, the answer would have been a firm no. But when the United Arab Emirates came under a relentless Iranian attack during the US-Israeli war on Tehran, Israel agreed to deploy one of its most sensitive military systems.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly ordered the Israeli military to send an Iron Dome interceptor battery - and soldiers to operate it - to the UAE after a call with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a move that demonstrates just how far ties have come.

Now, as the UAE distances itself from its traditional allies because of their stance on the Iran war, Israel sees an unprecedented opportunity to further strengthen its ties, several Israeli officials have told CNN.

The UAE, which in 2020 became the first Arab nation in 26 years to normalize ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords, has said the Iran war could reshape its regional alliances, citing disappointment with some of its closest Arab partners. Abu Dhabi would instead become closer to Israel and nations that supported it during the war, including France, the United States, and the United Kingdom, officials say.

“Amid the limited positive developments to emerge from the Iran war, this relationship (with Abu Dhabi) stands out as ‘good news,’” an Israeli source with close knowledge of relations with the UAE told CNN. “Ties have advanced to a new level, including at the leadership level.”

UAE officials and state-linked commentators have in recent weeks issued rare public rebukes of Arab nations for failing to step up as the country bore the brunt of Iran’s attacks during Tehran’s retaliation in the US-Israeli war.

The stance of fellow Gulf Arab monarchies “was the weakest historically,” Anwar Gargash, an adviser to the UAE president, said at a conference in Dubai this week.

“I expected it from the Arab League and I’m not surprised,” Gargash said, referring to the bloc of 22 Arab states. “But I did not expect it from the Gulf (states), and I am surprised.”

Iran’s economy was in a dire state before the war. Now millions face job losses and poverty

Asal, a freelance designer in her 30s living in Tehran, used to get projects from abroad all the time.

But after nearly two months without the internet, she told CNN by phone, “no new projects, no replies. It’s like everything just stopped overnight.”

On the verge of tears, she said her income doesn’t even cover her basic expenses anymore. She and others who spoke with CNN for this story asked only to use their first name for privacy reasons.

Asal is one of several million Iranians for whom Iran’s conflict with the United States and Israel is deeply personal. They have lost their work and are being pushed into poverty.

Few sectors have been spared. Among the legions of newly unemployed are refinery and textile workers, truck drivers, flight attendants and journalists.

Iran’s economy was in a dire state before the conflict. National income per person had fallen from about $8,000 in 2012 to $5,000 in 2024, ravaged by inflation, corruption and sanctions.

The outlook is even worse. Up to 4.1 million more people could fall into poverty due to the conflict, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Trump’s new plan to ‘guide’ merchant ships through Hormuz leaves many questions unanswered

The US plan to “guide” ships through the Strait of Hormuz, announced by President Donald Trump just hours before it went into effect, leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

US Central Command said in a statement on X that its support for the operation, dubbed Project Freedom, “will include guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms.”

But how those military assets figure into getting merchant ships moving through the strait again is not defined.

Jennifer Parker, a nonresident fellow at the Lowy Institute and a former Royal Australian Navy officer, told CNN Monday that she expects the US military to increase its presence in and over the strait to provide reassurance to commercial vessels attempting to transit it.

“This appears to be an operation … which is less about providing direct protection to a vessel or a couple of vessels and more about trying to change the situation in the strait” so ships “feel safe,” Parker said.

That mission could include a few US Navy ships in the strait and a range of aircraft flying over it that could spot and take out any small boats or ships trying to attack commercial vessels, she said.

While a convoy escort operation, with US destroyers steaming alongside merchant ships, is unlikely, according to Parker, she said an increase of US warships going through the strait would be a positive move.

That’s because to stop the operation, Iran would have to directly confront the US Navy, something it has not done to date.

“In some ways (Trump) is forcing Iran’s hand,” she said.

“They would need to escalate and fire at US warships, which is a different level of escalation,” Parker said.

Trump’s announcement of the plan drew a quick rebuke from Iran, with Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission, warning that that any US interference in the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a violation of the ceasefire that has been in effect since April 8.

“The Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf would not be managed by Trump’s delusional posts!” he said in a post on X.

“Any foreign military force, especially the invading American army” will be attacked if they try to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz, the commander of the Iranian armed forces’ Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said, according to Iran’s Fars news agency reported.

Trump earlier said any “interference” from Iran would be met with “force.”

Shipping execs not convinced

Shipping executives are not convinced the new US plan lessens the risk. “It takes both sides to unblock — not just one,” Bjørn Højgaard, CEO of ship manager Anglo-Eastern told CNN.

Trump sees blockade extension as best option for forcing Iran back to the negotiating table

President Donald Trump has told his top advisers in recent days he wants the US naval blockade of Iranian ports to continue, sources familiar with the talks said, and his team has begun laying the groundwork for such an extension, including a longer-term closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The president, for now, is digging into a strategy designed to inflict as much economic pain on Iran as possible in the hopes of forcing Tehran back to the negotiating table without having to resume military strikes, the sources said.

But the strategy for dealing with a war that has now stretched into its ninth week is not without risk for Trump, who once predicted the conflict would last no longer than six weeks.

The strait’s closure has driven up gas prices, contributing to Americans’ weariness of the ongoing war and sending Trump’s approval ratings, especially on his handling of the economy, to new lows. And the cost of the conflict is adding up — a senior Pentagon official told lawmakers Wednesday the US has spent $25 billion on the Iran war so far. All of that is feeding GOP anxiety about the party’s prospects in November elections.

Nor is it clear this strategy will work — Iran has previously demonstrated an ability to withstand debilitating economic pain without capitulating to American demands.

Still, Trump appears intent on tightening the grip on Iran’s economy until Tehran concedes to his red lines on nuclear enrichment, believing, in his words, the US holds “all the cards.”

“The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing. They are choking like a stuffed pig. And it is going to be worse for them. They can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told Axios in a phone interview Wednesday.

Later, in the Oval Office, he seemed to hint the US was ready for a long haul, telling CNN’s Kaitlan Collins the Iran war could end “on a similar timetable” as the war in Ukraine – a more than four-year conflict that shows no signs of abating anytime soon.

American officials have reviewed intelligence suggesting Iran’s economy can only survive for another few weeks, if not days, before the strain of the blockade forces its collapse, two people familiar with the talks said, pointing to Tehran’s struggles to store unsold oil.

Trump has suggested it won’t take long for the excess oil to cause permanent damage to Iran’s energy infrastructure.

“What happens is, that line explodes from within, both mechanically and in the earth,” he said Sunday on Fox News. “Something happens where it just explodes. They say they only have about three days left before that happens. And when it explodes, you can never rebuild it the way it was.”

Storm-weary central US braces for one more day of possibly severe weather after tornado outbreak

Multiple destructive twisters struck the central US on Friday afternoon during a tornado outbreak that capped a weeklong stretch of severe storms in the region. A lower severe weather threat remains possible Saturday as the same cold front pushes east.

The multistate storms exploded to life and wasted no time showing what they were capable of. At least two tornadoes tracked through the greater Rochester, Minnesota, area, and some were even caught on traffic cameras. No injuries were reported in Rochester’s Olmsted County, but there was widespread damage, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

Rows of homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed, with numerous roofs or entire stories missing, according to aerial video captured by CNN affiliate KARE.

Marion, Minnesota, was one of the hardest-hit areas, reporting damage to approximately 30 homes, with about 10 other homes damaged in other parts of the county, the post said. One video showed debris and tree branches strewn across front yards, with some homes having damaged roofs.
